Dr. Walter G. Copan received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A., and his undergraduate degrees from CWRU are in chemistry and music.
Dr. Copan is a patent holder, has authored numerous professional publications and presentations, and has served on the boards of many organizations, including the Licensing Executives Society (LES) USA and Canada, where he recently served as Regional Vice President for LES USA. He has contributed to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Council on Competitiveness, the World Intellectual Property Organization and the United Nations on innovation, technology transfer, energy and economic development matters. Case Western Reserve University recognized Dr. Copan as the University’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2008.
He is also an active member of the Association of University Technology Managers, and in the Licensing Executives Society (LES) in USA & Canada and LES International (LESI), he served as officer, committee chair and trustee, Chair of the Cleantech industry sector, Chair of Industry-University and Government Transactions and of the Chemicals, Energy and Environment sectors. He has also served as member of the National Advisory Council to the U.S. Federal Laboratory Consortium.
Dr. Copan led the joint task force on behalf of LESI with the United Nations Environment Programme, the European Patent Office, the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development and other partners on the transfer and licensing of clean energy technologies, and their impact potential for global economic development. Among his publications is “Energy and the Environment: Driving Technology and Licensing”, in Licensing Best Practices: Strategic, Territorial, and Technology Issues published by J. Wiley & Sons, New York (2006).
Other professional associations include the American Chemical Society, the National Business Incubation Association, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He is a certified licensing professional (CLPTM).
